Has anyone had experience getting to the train station in Civitavecchia
From the cruise port. I understand there is a shuttle to transport from pier to main cruise port entrance. In reading it looks like the train terminal is approx 1/2 mile. We have only minimal luggage, is this a 10-15 min walk ? We arrive 4/22/15. Thanks.
Very easy by all means walk, done it many times. Yes, you will wait for the shuttle at the gate of the port entrance. Have a wonderful cruise!!
As Jo stated, a shuttle bus will take you from your ship to the cruise port entrance and then it is a very easy walk especially if you have minimal luggage. Many people were doing it every time we have cruised in or out of there. If you go to bing.com you will probably be able to get very good aerial and birds eye views of the whole route. In you go to googlemaps.com and use the street view option you can probably pre walk the route at eye level. Takes a bit of experimentation, but it is really cool once you get the hang of it.
It is a flat walk along the beach from the port entrance. You will have to climb a set of stairs to get to the station since it is elevated above the beach area. You would be very smart to buy your ticket ahead of time at any other train station or travel agency. You should a Regionale train ticket. It is open seating and good for sixty days. There are some IC trains on that run but that requires a seat reservation on a specific train at a specific time. The reason for buying the ticket ahead of time is that the little station will be overrun by all of the other passengers from the cruises ships in port that day. With ticket in hand, you can check the board inside the station for the next R train to Rome, validate (time stamp) your ticket in the little box on the back of the station and go to your platform. Get on the train and grab the first seat. If crowded you stand till a seat becomes available. The Regionale train will take about an hour, fifteen to Termini. We have done that a number of times and only once where we unable to give a seat quickly.
Thank you all for the response. It walk looked doable from my research. It is always good to get confirmation from experience travelers who have done this before me. The tip about buying the ticket ahead was appreciated. We will have to research how to do that since it is my understanding
Regional train tickets are sold only 7 days prior to travel. We will be aboard ship that period but can always try to buy online aboard ship, or look for a travel agency after our arrival.
If you have email access on board you can buy the ticket within seven days of your arrival, it will be emailed to you, print it out or just show the ticket on your e-device to the conductor; personally, I like to have a hard copy of the ticket.
You might check roninrome.com. There you can find detailed directions, including maps and instructions which include pictures of the route highlighting landmarks and signs to look for along the way. Have a wonderful cruise and enjoy your trip.
While walking next to the beach in the direction of the train station , cross the main street at Via Santa Fermina and you should see a white building that is Hotel de "la Ville". Do a quick right turn onto Viale dela Repubblica keeping that white building on your left. Continue walking straight until you get to the train station. This route is a slight upward slope and eliminates the need to haul the luggage up a bunch of steps. Even simpler is to cross the main street as soon as can after leaving the port and just walk parallel to the beach on Viale dela Repubblica. Go to googlemaps.com, type in Hotel de "la Ville" Civitavecchia Italy, use the street view feature and you can virtually walk the route before you ever leave home.
.....Regional train tickets are sold only 7 days prior to travel. ......
That is false. That ONLY applies to on-line purchases. A Regionale train ticket purchased at a train station or travel agency is good for 60 days from date of purchase so it is technically possible to buy a Regionale ticket 59 days prior to travel. Since on-line Regionale tickets come validated, it is generally recommended that Regionale tickets not be purchased on-line. When your purchase a Regionale ticket on line you specify a start time (i.e. - 800) and a date. Then the ticket is only valid for four hours after 800 and on that day. In your situation that probably would work since you have a good idea of when you are getting off the ship, the Regionale trains are frequent, and just over an hour to Termini. And that is still a better alternative than waiting in line to purchase a ticket.
What is your total schedule? If you are in any other Italian port, which I assume you would be, you can easily find the train station or a travel agency and buy your Regionale train tickets there.
Thanks all for info. Frank, thanks for info on regional train tickets and clarification. We will not be in other Italain ports prior to Civitavecchia. I have read that tickets are sold just outside the port entrance so will check that out.
