Cruise Line at Civitavecchia to Rome Fiumicino Airport

We are taking our 1st trip to Europe this spring. Our cruise ship over lands near Rome at Civitavecchia. We have arranged to pick up our long term rental car at Rome's airport. Does anyone have any idea how to get from the ship to the airport in the cheapest manner? We will have all of our luggage with us too.

Hi Betsy,

My wife and I have done this a few times. I will suggest three options, we did two out of three. First option the cruise line has transfers available to and from the ship, this is the most expensive. Second option is taxi, which is a little less expensive, and third option is the train if you don't mind the hassle, this is the least expensive but you will need to walk once you arrive at the station in Civitavecchia. You can also go on line and hire a car and driver to meet you at the airport, this isn't a bad idea either. Good luck and have fun on your cruise.

aybe you should first visit why you would want to rent a car at the Rome Airport. Driving in Rome is as my kids put it - is "scary". Where are you trying to go once you have the rental car? If you want to go to Tuscany, Umbria etc you can just rent a car right in Civitavecchia. The fee for renting and returning in a different drop off are not too bad (about 60 euro when I booked this way with Avis) but save you the hassle or revisiting somewhere you have already been.

If you want to go to Rome, Florence, Venice or other big towns, these are no place for rental cars - just take a train instead. Or rent a car just outside of a big city to enjoy the countryside via rental car which is a great way to experience it!
If you are going to stay at hotel or B&B in Rome, they can and will arrange a car and driver to meet you right at your ship and take you directly to their hotel. Civitavecchia is about 90 miles from the city center so it's not cheap but expedites your visit.

Thanks guys.
We can't get a car at Civitavecchia nor rent one elsewhere in Italy as this is a LONG TERM buy back rental program - 12 weeks - and the co. in France only has certain pick up points outside of France. So we MUST pick it up at the AIRPORT in Rome.
The train sounds like ouy best option.
