Cruise from Marseille arriving Rome first

Hi

We have a cruise leaving Aug 29 from Marseille.

We are flying into Rome on Aug 28 and have a 10 hr layover before Marseille. We are wondering if that is enough time to see some sights in Rome or should we fly to Nice instead and bus it from there to Marseille. There's a 2-3 hr bus from Nice to Marseille. Also wondering if that bus is worth the hassle or just wait 10hrs in Rome.

thank-you

I'm curious why you're flying into Rome in the first place if it's just a connection. Nice makes more sense, or even Paris. Both have train connections to Marseille.

That 10 hr layover is a huge time suck. Yes, it allows a short window to go into Rome and see one or 2 things. But note the short time you would have once you disembark, get through Passport Control, store your luggage, then spend an hour getting to the city. Then another hour to return to the airport and be there 2 hours before your flight, retrieve your luggage and get through security. And know that you are in high season, so advance ticket purchases with timed entry would be required for most of the top sites.

So, if a Nice arrival is available instead, then grab it! Both bus and train are available to get to Marseille. They would take less than 3 hours.

Thanks for everyone's advice. 10 hrs in Rome was pushing it and too rushed to enjoy (we've also been there before so see most of it). We weren't looking forward to the 2.5hr bus ride from Nice on arrival earlier. We just saw that we can fly into Lyon instead on Aug 26 (arriving Aug 27) then take the high speed train (1.5hr) to Marseille on Aug 28.

Any thoughts on Lyon? good choice? lots to see? sorry I know this is the Italy forum.

Lyon is a wonderful city. How long of a layover there can you get.
