I'm traveling to Rome, Italy for 4 days and then getting on a cruise through the Greek Islands, Turkey, Cyrus and Crete. I'm mostly interested in getting the eSIM for when we are in Rome for maps, taxi's and that kind of thing. I have tour scheduled on each of the port stops so I'm not sure if I need to have the eSIM for while I'm in each port. Do ya'll think I need the eSIM for the port times or just the 4 days in Rome?
For Rome, an eSIM is definitely useful since you’ll be exploring on your own and need maps or taxis. On cruise days, most ports are pretty structured with tours, so you won’t rely on data as much offline maps or ship Wi‑Fi usually cover the gaps. If you like flexibility, a small data plan that works across countries can be handy for quick searches or messaging between stops, but it’s not essential if your tours handle most logistics.
Rather than the hassle of using several esims, there are vendors with global esims, or European esims. Most want a fixed amount, like $15-20 for a month. There are also two vendors that I know of, which are Pay-As-You Go. That means I give them $10 or $20 one time, and money is deducted from your balance as you use data. There is no monthly fee and the balance lasts forever. If you use a lot of data, you can re-charge your "digital wallet" through their app or website. I'm using both of these here in the US, and they both work fine for me. Neither of them give you a phone number, but Roamless lets you telephone cheaply using their app.
Roamless is $2.45/Gb. for USA, Italy, Greece or Turkey
Bcengi is $1.68/Gb for USA, $1.41/Gb for Italy or Greece and $1.68/Gb for Turkey
Airalo eSIMs have worked well for me and are inexpensive.
