Crowds & weather in late August?

Can anyone tell me if the crowds are still bad the last week in August into the first week of September? What is the weather like at this time? We will be traveling to Rome/Florence/Venice/CT.

Sadly, crowded and hot during that timeframe. If you can swing it, push to late Sept/early Oct for a little relief in both areas.
