Crowds in Rome during New Years?

Since my daughter is in Spain on a study abroad program we plan to visit Rome Dec 29 to Jan 1. I'd like to visit the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Will it be crowded during that time of year? Do you recommend that I purchase ticket ahead of time? I appreciate any suggestions you have to offer.

My wife and I go to Italy often at Christmas. It's our favorite time to go. The Sistine Chapel which is usually so crowded is quite uncrowded and enjoyable during the times you stated. It will be closed on Jan 1 of course. I never purchase tickets ahead of time but of course you can. The museum has shorter hours during the winter so be sure you pay attention to the times posted. You can write if you have any questions.

Thanks for your quick response. We are trying to get a feel about what clothing to wear. What type of weather should we expect during that time of year? Is it rainy?

Due to the crowds at the Vatican Museum near the holidays the last week of December and the first week of January the Vatican Museum will have extended hours: 10a-4:45p, last entry at 3:30p.
