Crossing the Ponte degli Scalzi in Venice with luggage

We are going to be arriving in Venice at the train station. Our hotel is just on the other side of the canal, we will need to cross the Ponte degli Scalzi with our luggage. Friends that we are traveling with are saying we will want to hire someone to take our luggage over the bridge. They say there are people there to assist you (for a charge). Looking for thoughts on this. TIA

It’s about 40 stair steps going up and the same number going down. But not steep. It will depend on how big and heavy your bags are.

Here is a photo:

I have not personally been "on" the bridge, just on a boat that showed the view of it.....and it was crowded with people. So, add potential crowds (depending on what time you are arriving), and the stairs (see photo) that are apparently involved, it might be well worth hiring someone to take your luggage. That said, I would ask "how" the luggage is moved. Does someone carry it behind you? Or is it taken from the train station by boat to your hotel, etc.?

We were shocked to see boats(row type boats) PILED with luggage every which way, such that it would be easy for a bag or two to fall off the boats into the lagoon. I have no idea if the boats were coming from a cruise ship (which were allowed to dock more closely back then...I am pretty sure there are restrictions now) or if said boats were coming from the train station or a bus or something. But, right then and there, I thought "I would never want my luggage piled so precariously on something like that." No doubt a bag or two or ten goes missing every year. But, sometimes what we don't know, we just do not know, and that gives us one less thing to worry about.

But, if the helpers that are there to assist for a fee, and if they/your luggage stay(s) close to you, then, yep, I would probably quickly pay if I had more than one or two light bags......the photo shows A LOT of stairs. And, it could be not "just" the stairs, but a lot of people dodging to do with luggage.

I'll be curious what other posters have experienced, (who may have walked across that bridge and had luggage going to the other side on the bridge on the same journey) so I can learn, too.

We have done it with carry-on luggage without any issues. I've never seen anyone offering help ( for money) in my own experiences. No one has ever approached me.
Does your hotel have any suggestions? Perhaps email them.
Enjoy Venice.

It is not that difficult with luggage. Sure, a heap of steps, but the bridge is not so steep. Relax, make up your mind once you arrive in Venice.
When you exit the station, pause on the steps; observe the best view in all of Italy.

I did encounter that on that bridge a few years ago. A guy tried to grab my wife’s roller bag for that purpose. He wasn’t a thief, just a hustler trying to make a few euros. Unless you have significant physical limitations or more heavy luggage than you can handle any other place, you will not need any such help on that easily crossed bridge.

I've crossed the bridge with carry-on sized luggage while making my way to a laundromat in Venice. With reasonably sized luggage it wasn't all that difficult. Just take your time if needed and you'll be on your way in no time.

Ask the price before letting someone move your luggage. It won't be cheap.

I've seen porters on the steps right outside the station.
