A hotel has offered a cross-booking,where I would stay in different rooms each night. They offered a 10 % discount. The hotel is booked for my dates otherwise. Has anyone done this successfully.
Thank you
That means you would have to pack and unpack each day and there would probably be a time period when you would not have access to a room. A 10% savings is not enough for that much hassle. In a couple of situations I have done it but it was because I want to stay longer with short notice. A little inconvenient but it worked. But now sure I would do it everyday. Once I was packed up and just walking out of the room when a message on my phone indicated that my flight home had been cancelled. Walked to front desk and checked back into a different room. That was ok.
I’ve done this once in Yosemite, where lodging is very hard to find. It’s not ideal. You’ll spend time packing everything up in the morning, bringing your bags to be stored, and checking out of room one. Then later you check in to room two.
If you have your heart set on this hotel and are ok with that process and the discount being offered for the inconvenience, go for it.
If you sink-wash your dirty laundry, you won't be able to wash stuff the night before the change unless it is certain to dry within about 12 hours. For me that would be a real problem if I had to switch rooms more than once at the end of the stay in the city.
I've changed hotels twice on my current trip due to a last-minute extension of stay that couldn't be accommodated at my original hotel at a price I was willing to pay. That's even more of an issue than switching rooms within the same hotel. It's not something I'd ever set out to do, but if it's that or leave town before hitting all my significant sightseeing targets, I'd do it again.
Packing cubes and a good bathroom kit would be really helpful in this situation, to help you move out quickly. I wouldn't enjoy it, and 10% would not be enough for me. Number of nights you are doing this would also be a factor.
Anyone who's been on a Rick Steves tour has done this before. About six diff hotels in a 2 week period. 😉
@Jill- Did you read the question? This is about changing rooms in the same hotel over the course of a stay. I don’t think RS tours does this.
Are you solo? How light do you pack? How many days?
Is it a city or a tiny village? Is there availability somewhere similar?
I would not do this for 10% off.
I think Jill means that if you are in a RS' tour (actually any organized tour) you often have to unpack and repack every day because most tours entail lots of one night stays at each hotel.
Actually most RS tours are 2 night stays with some random 1- nighters.
I agree with the comment upthread about having done it in a National Park. I did it in Yellowstone because I could get a cabin with an en suite bath every other night. After I did that I decided it was NOT worth the ensuite and next time I’d just suck it up and go to the community shower block.
Your choices might be different.
How far out are you booking. Any chance they’ll have cancellations and you’d be able to stay in the same room?
Yes, that is what I meant. I was hinting that the folks on this forum who have been on Rick Steves tours are used to packing and unpacking frequently during a trip. 😉
I've done it before. To me, it's one of those things that can happen when you contact a lodging directly, rather than book online. Otherwise, the hotel would just show not available.
I don't mind working with lodging to make things work. I'm not even sure I've asked for or been offered a discount for the inconvenience. I pack very light so it's really not too big of a deal to me. Sometimes you plan to move, then another room opens up and you don't end up moving.
Thank you to everyone for your replies! It is really nice to talk to people about traveling.
This would be for 3 nights in Sorrento at the beginning of the trip. We have an inexpensive place booked, then I saw some hotels with these gorgeous views, but it seems October will be busy month there:)
I’m sure we will enjoy either way. Thanks again
Hi, I move around a lot when traveling solo but am very efficient doing it. My next trip will have five one-night stops. Here’s some things that help with frequent moves in general:
My favorite toiletry kit, although not as lightweight as I wish, is the LL Bean kit where everything can have a defined spot in the kit. Zip it open, hang it up in the bathroom & it’s already organized. Zip it closed the next morning & pack.
I also keep everything in my suitcase, except the toiletry kit, the clothes set out for the next day, and a colorful mesh zipper “envelope” that stays on the desk until I place my phone charger and adapter back into it when I wake up. Make items visible to lessen the chance of leaving something behind. My charger block & adapters have bright fluorescent-striped thin duct tape on them.
I pack clothes that will dry quickly overnight so four outfits are plenty for a month trip. My newest Royal Robbins dress will dry in about three hours if I roll it up in a towel, first, and let it absorb for a minute before hanging.
If you typically like to come back during the day for a quick break, I would nicely request that they clean your next room by 1 pm, so you aren’t without a room during the transition.
