Croatia to Italy

My husband and I will be traveling in the Balkans for a few weeks in May, ending up in Dubrovnik. We have 3 days left at the end of our trip. I'm a big mosaic fan and really want to see Ravenna, Italy. While we're in the area I thought we could also spend a day in San Marino and a day in Bologna. We've traveled pretty extensively in Italy and have missed this area in the past.

So what's the best way to get from Dubrovnik to Italy - fly to Bologna? Venice? What would be convenient and preferably services by a discount airline?

Once we get there should we base ourselves in bologna and day trip by train to ravenna and San Marino? Is there a better place to base from?

Thanks in advance. I am also posting in the Croatia forum since it involves both.

You can fly to Venice and take a train to Bologna, or fly to Bologna via Frankfurt. I would do the first option. You will have to research prices. Either way, it will take you most of a day.

Bologna to Ravenna is almost 1.5 hour each way, but doable. San Marino is tough to get to without a car, which is one reason we have not gone there.

Last year friends visited San Marino by taking a train from Bologna to the nearest station (Rimini?) and then hiring a taxi to take them to San Marino and back. They didn't tell me the exact cost but said it wasn't cheap. Looks like the train would take 1-2 hours each way, depending on which train you took.

I would fly to Bologna, base there, and spend a long day in Ravenna, or vice versa. A second day trip could be to Ferrara.

I have never been to San Marino, either.

I think there is a bus from Rimini to San Marino. I have been to Ravenna and Rimini from Bologna (to run races). Easy train rides. Almost went to San Marino but it was a Sunday and not very many buses.

I'm a little hazy on how/where you need to end up after the 3 days. Where are you flying home from?

Once you reach Ravenna, you can easily spend an entire day seeing the mosaics. They are magnificent.

I would not try to fit in San Marino since you've only got 3 days total.

I haven't booked flights yet but I'll open jaw into Sofia, Bulgaria where we start the trip and likely out of Bologna, Venice or Florence. It sounds like I might be better off renting a car to go to San Marino or I may be better off flying from dubrovnik somewhere else and save Ravenna and San Marino for another time.

Anne, I have no idea what is on our agenda after Dubrovnik, but there is plenty to see/do nearby to fill a few extra days. One option is to go south to Montenegro for a few days. Or detour up to Mostar and Sarajevo. I agree that your proposed detour up to Ravenna seems ill-advised on this trip.

Check out rome2rio.com. I did some quick searches and it seems like an expensive and long connection getting to Bologna or Venice. Even a ferry across the Adriatic to Bari is a time sucker. I went to Montenegro for a day and wished I had more time there.
