Has anyone taken a ferry from Porec, Croatia to Venice, Italy? Any thoughts, is it a good idea, other options for travel from Croatia to Venice? I have heard the train is long and difficult and involves a bus.
I took the Venezia Lines hydrofoil from Rovinj to Venice last October. It stopped in Porec, where most of the passengers boarded. It was far faster than any other public transportation option I considered, and I would do it again. Although slightly pricy, I thought the convenience was well worth the price. My recollection is that at least one other hydrofoil runs from Porec to Venice - Atlas I think, but maybe only for tours. Not sure about ferry service, which would take longer but at a lower cost. Venezia Lines has a website where you can check sailing schedules and prices. If you decide to go with the hydrofoil option, I would advise prepurchasing your tickets online.
Yeah, the train ride/transition from Slovenia to Italy sucks. I you route through Trieste, you have to get off the train, on the bus, on a new train.
Sadly the bus schedule has really been paired down to, as more and more people in the area get cars.
I haven't don the ferry yet, but having down bus, train, and drive - I would definitely try a ferry first if I had the opportunity.
PS - If you find an affordable car with the drop off fee, it's actually a nice drive.
