Crete Senese Drives

RS talks about Crete Senese Drives in the Sienese Crests about 15 miles south of Siena as being quite beautiful. We will be leaving Siena on a Thursday morning heading to a 3 day stay in Orvieto. Would it be doable to drive the Sienese on our way? How much time should we allow?

Totally do-able. You can spend as much time there as you'd like, but I'd leave at least 4 hours and 8 would be better. If you left at 9am you'd have time to drive slowly, take in the landscape, stop to take photos and maybe have lunch in Montalcino or one of the other towns along the way. Then a few hours in the afternoon for a leisurely drive via Pienza and an Abbey or two, and then on to Orvieto to arrive around (say) 5pm. http://www.lodgephoto.com/galleries/italy-tuscany-lacrete/

Thank you so much Matthew! I sure didn't want to miss it. I think we will take your advice and use the whole day to leisurely drive the area and stop in a couple of the small towns as you say.

We drove it as far as Montalcino and loved every minute of it. Lots of small towns to stop at.
