Crete Senese Drive

Hi,

This is our first trip to Europe. We are planning to rent a car in Siena and go on the Crete Senese Laurentina road (Siena-Asciano-San Giovanni D'Asso, #438 on road maps) all the way up to Montalcino.

I have a few questions.

How long is this drive? Approximately how long will it take? Are there any other stop overs besides Asciano? Where can we get the road maps from? Are there easy to find public parking lots in Montalcino? Didn't find this info in the Italy book.

We are applying for the International Driving Permit. Is there anything else we should be prepared for?

Thanks,
Meetu

Meetu, we always go the bookstore and buy a Michelin auto atlas of Italy. It is a great book/ map of Italy. Even though this is just a real short drive, I would also recommend that you:

  1. buy a GPS before you leave, or (preferably a TOM TOM, since they have the EU maps already loaded in their software.)
  2. rent a GPS from your auto rental agency

If you want to see any area in detail go to the Michelin website; www.ViaMichelin.com

There you can see the milage, and even print out a detailed map that you can take.

Jerry, at Tripadvisor.com, has experience with Montalcino. Why don't you send him an Email (italybound@verizon.net) and ask about the parking?

Make sure that you read all of Rick Steves info on drving in Europe/Italy, then go and enjoy!

Meetu,
To park in Montalcino you have at least two choices, at the rotary, if your coming up the hill from SS2take the first right at the rotary (almost directly across from you by the fortezza wall) then up the little drive through the arch will take you to a pay lot next to the fortezza or at the rotary you take the second right down the hill and the first right into a free parking lot, there will be a lot of stairs to climb to the town but this is the best option on Friday morning (market day).
