Are credit cards accepted by taxis in Rome? They weren't a few years ago, but taxis in many places now accept them.
They are and probably were a few years ago as well BUT the drivers don't like to take them so will tell you no first unless you insist
And even if they say yes at pickup when it comes to drop off don't be surprised if their machine is oddly not working and cash is requested.
If you must pay by credit just make sure when picked up the driver understands you have no cash and credit is your only option.
Some private drivers will not take credit cards but all taxis should.
Cash is the preferred method of payment by Italian businesses, including taxi owners, primarily because Italians love to evade taxes (both the VAT and the income tax) therefore cash makes it easier.
I generally pay cash for a taxi, since it’s rarely over 20€. However for a longer ride (like Malpensa to Milan), I’d probably opt for a card payment. They take it, if they say they don’t they are telling you a lie, it’s just they prefer to evade the tax.
DO NOT TIP TAXI DRIVERS.
