Try American Express. That seems to be doing the trick these days.

Thanks. Most museums don't offer that option. Seems like Visa and MasterCard are preferred.

This isn't uncommon as the credit card verification systems used in Europe are different than the ones used in the USA. In essence, their credit card verification system may not recognize your credit card...

You have several options.

1) Phone the museum and have them bill your card over the phone. Skype Voice Call and Google Voice are economical ways to call Europe...

2) Make the purchase via facsimile. There are several web-based fax sites available or you can go to an Office Supply store that offers fax services.

3) Book an escorted tour. The tour provider handles all the ticketing details for you. I happen to like escorted tours as the tour guide knows a lot more than about the subject than I do.

Molly, Visa and Mastercard are the preferred cards throughout of Europe. I wouldn't count on Amex being accepted much of anywhere.

For purchasing rail tickets in Switzerland and Austria, Amex seems to be the only game in town. Amex (and Diners Club) were exempted from the EU Directive PSD2 regarding credit card fees, and seems to have thrown a wrench into International Visa and Mastercard on-line payments with SBB and OEBB.

A lot of people have been having issues with credit card purchases at the Vatican website. Most have found that if they call the fraud department and have the "verified by visa" logo added to their account they have no further issues. It's not enough to have the credit card company notate where you're traveling, it must also contain the "verified by visa" notation in order to go through.

I had no issues with using my MC for Borghese, but it was denied for the Secret Itineraries Tour in Venice. I tried again with my Amazon Prime Visa and it went right through.
