Crazy to spend 3 days in Naples in July?

I fly into Naples in early July and have 3 days before the next part of my itinerary. Naples v. Sorrento? I know that RS recommends staying in Sorrento rather than Naples, but the hotels in Sorrento are very expensive, and I imagine that it would be very crowded there. First time in Naples; loved Rome, Florence, Venice in past visits. I'm more of a museum and cultural site person than a beach person. But is Naples too intense and crowded? Thanks!

Naples is not intense or crowded. It is well connected transportation wise to take day trips other places if you find it a dud on day one.

It will likely be hot, but beyond that, it sounds like you would enjoy Naples. My husband and I absolutely loved it and wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

As long as you have accommodation with reliable AC, you should be fine!
Naples is packed with great things to see, do and eat.
Also, perhaps check for a hotel with a pool.
Some have small rooftop ones.

We enjoyed Naples! Renaissance Hotel is in a good central location with a rooftop pool and dining. The view was spectacular! It is a larger scale hotel, but at least you can count on AC! Buon Viaggio!
