Follow your airline's instructions. The US is still requiring testing to enter the US- test one day before flying. Check the CDC site for the most current info .

No one can return to the USA without a test to reenter.

The test requirement is the USA requirement. You can't enter America without a test. It will be checked in the foreign country not JFK.
