Courmayeur to the full Cable Car experience on Monte Bianco/Mont Blanc, then back to Courmayeur

Does anyone have experience on going from Valle D'Aosta to Chamonix via cable car and bussing back through the tunnel? Or does it make sense to do it how Rick describes (https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles/sailing-over-french-alps) and drive up to Chamonix, then start the cable car on the French side to the Italian side, then bus back, and drive back to Courmayeur?

Any insight on buying the ticket or how to make it work most efficiently/romantically/beautifully?

5 years ago we started a trip in Chamonix in late June and planned to take the cable car to Courmayeur in Italy and then bus into Aosta. I learned that the cable car was shut down that time of year. They told us it was scheduled to start up in another week or so. I'm not sure how you find out those details but we ended up having to take the bus from Chamonix into Courmayeur and then another bus to Aosta. It was a bummer as I was really looking forward to riding the cable car. The bus was pretty inexpensive and I think we got the ticket the day before or the day of, that was not a problem. I expect as long as the cable car is running you could go either direction.

Good luck, I hope you're able to make it work!

Thanks Jim,

Yeah, I've found that you can buy a round trip from either Coeurmayeur or Chamonix, with the bus ride through the Mont Blanc tunnel for the return. That's probably how we'll roll.
