Couple of months into it now

While I'm still lovin' being here I gotta say we've hit ALOT of frustrations and it's dampening my spirits somewhat. Seems like everyday there's a new situation to deal with and it's taking some of the joy away from being here. While I have the support of my company to help deal with things it's still a hassle. Feel sorry for anyone who moves here on their own with no support! Not so much the language barrier but just trying to get everyday normal stuff done.Guess I have a bit of homesickness going on too!

Sorry...guess I just wanted to vent some!!

ron,

I once considered moving to Italy, but after reading This Website, I came to the conclusion that it probably wouldn't be as much fun as I first imagined (although it would probably be a very interesting "life experience"). I can't remember the details of your initial posts - which city are you living in?

Aside from the Permesso di Soggiorno and other "residency" details, one of the parts that seemed most intimidating for me was exactly what you mentioned - the "everyday normal stuff" like electricity or internet service, as well as finding Doctors or Dentists. According to the website, Dentists are especially in short supply and many do not speak English. While it sounded like a good idea at first, I came to conclusion that it would be better to just continue visiting Italy. However, I am still considering a stay of perhaps one or two months to study Italian (perhaps next year?).

You're fortunate that you have support from your company, and probably others that have gone through the same experience. At least in your situation you know that your stay there is finite, and therefore you'll be back home at some point in the future.

As a previous reply mentioned, you'll probably get over being homesick after a while, perhaps after you get into somewhat of a "daily routine" with social contacts in the place you're living.

Good luck!

My sister and her husband lived in France for 18 months while he was on a special project for his company. At first it was all exciting and fun (despite some hassles due to a resentful local employee who was supposed to be HELPING them with things, but was very obstructionist instead). At about the 6 month mark, my sister was very homesick and weepy. By the one year mark she never wanted to leave and really didn't want to come back to the states when the project was completed. According to many others she met who did the same thing, this is very typical. It didn't hurt that our family did a LOT of visiting in the early months they were there (first Christmas the entire family was together ON Christmas Day in something like 20 years).

Get in touch with Ron in Rome. He might have some good tips for you. www.roninrome.com

I don't know which city you are in, but there are tons of expat organizations everywhere in the world, so Italy should have some too. These can be very helpful to the newcomer, with information and support.

Thanks all for the words of encouragement. I know things will smooth out in a bit. I'm in Cesena which is close to Ravenna. Nice little town and we have made some Italian friends. We have had alot of fun in the short time we've been here...just the last couple of weeks seems like there's a new problem(s)everyday.

Hi Ron,

Perhaps, you can take some comfort in knowing that your stay is temporary (not forever, right?) and that it's an experience that many of us dream of fulfilling! Hang in there!

Thanks for sharing your experiences-good and otherwise. I guess the philosophy to try to have is, "OK, this is not a good day, but it is a bad day in Italy." When you get back to the US and have a bad day, you can tell yourself, I wish this was a bad day in Italy.

Ron,
Maybe, you should write a book about your adventures ....could just be another
"Under the Tuscan Sun", waiting to be written!

You never know.......
