Countryside day trip from Rome

Hi, we will be spending 4 days in Rome before taking a 10 day Mediterranean cruise. We wanted to take a train in to the countryside for a day. Can you recommend a good destination. I had considered Assisi, Calcata and Tivoli. Any thoughts on these?

Tivoli is not far from Rome and a magnificent place to visit with it’s multitude of fountains. We also traveled one time to Castel Gandolfo( Pope’s Summer Residence is also there) for lunch by the lake when Rome was having a heat wave. Assisi is quite far for a day trip.

For a day trip outside of Rome we went to Ostia Antica. It’s a smaller version of Pompeii. We took the metro line B to the Piramide stop, walked to a nearby train platform and then took the commuter train to Ostia Antica. Very easy and a great day.

We did a day trip to Orvieto and it was probably the highlight of our trip. We had a wonderful time! Very dramatic views, and a beautiful Duomo. It's about an hour train ride from Rome.
