After reading about robberies etc. from Termini train station what is a safer way to get to the port to get on a cruise ship

You could look at romashuttle.com. We've used them many times and they are extremely reliable. The cost for 3 people from Roma to Civitavecchia is 110€.

You could ask your hotel to arrange transportation to Civitavecchia. Just an idea.

Buon viaggio,

Since you asked for a safer way, consider a private car service. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service -- not a cab company. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We usually send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance.

If all you want to do is avoid Termini, just board the Regionale at one of the other Rome stations it calls at, like Ostiense, Trastevere, or San Pietro. Just 5 EUR pp and will get you there in 1 hour or less. One of these stations may actually be closer to your hotel.

Lorraine, do note that not everything you "read" is "the truth." All public places in the world have some crime, including in Canada.

I found the train from Ostiense to Civitavecchia to be about an hour long and local-stop tedious, and a very long walk from the station to the port shuttle pick-up point. It seemed like the Civitavecchia city bus was every half hour or so, but it didn't happen to match up for us. I also had trouble with Rick's instructions for the walk, as they appear in "Mediterranean Cruise Ports". Be sure to look at google maps, and plan for the walk or taxi. Be sure to ask a Civitavecchia taxi if they are allowed to go onto the pier, or if they are going to drop you off at the line for the port bus shuttle.

Ostiense had no open ticket booths when we left for the port, but our Chip and Pin card worked in the ticket machine. The train ticket is dirt cheap, just a few Euros.
