Cortona - yes, no, or maybe?

Exploring possible options for our 3 days and nights that haven’t already been scheduled in Tuscany, the town of Cortona, on the far eastern side of the region, looks like a possibility. Has anyone been there? Is it good for staying 3 days/nights, with or without any side trip(s)? Any sights or experiences you thought were special, memorable, or not-to-be-missed?

Thanks, grazie!

It is a cute town on a hill. So you take the bus from train station to get up there. I only went for a day trip/lunch to check it out. As with any "hill town" some of the streets are up and down. No experience for nighttime but it's probably lovely. From there, you can day-trip into Florence for sure as I was going the opposite (Florence to Cortona). Have fun.

Yes! I just got back from a week in Cortona. This was my third visit. I usually rent a villa with friends and use it as a home base for exploring other towns. It’s easy to get to by train. There are several excellent restaurants (always order the pici!). There are numerous art galleries and shops. The MAEC is a museum dedicated to the Etruscans. There are also a handful of interesting churches. Even if you don't have a car, there are several wineries nearby that are easily reachable by taxi. And there’s a large lake two train stops south (heading towards Rome).

We love Cortona! We stayed four nights and loved every minute. Also with a car, easy side trips to Montepulciano and other places. We stayed in an apartment in a monastery at the bottom of the hill and drove up to the free parking during the day or for dinner. We are planning another trip back. Everyone we have sent to Cortona has loved it.

I think we’re on the right track, and have reserved 3 nights this fall — Cortona here we come!
