Cortona with no car

My mom and I will be traveling to Italy May 2011, and will be going from Florence to Cortona as early in the day as we can. We plan to stay in an Agriturismo about 20 minutes outside of the city. The hostess said she could pick us up at the train station upon our arrival (for a fee, of course), as well as take us back when it's time to leave. We unfortunately can only stay one night, so my thought was to have her pick us up straight from the train station when we arrive, spend the afternoon/evening enjoying the countryside at the agriturismo, then the next day having her take us to the town of Cortona instead of the train station so we can explore. However, my question is, any ideas on where to leave our bags while we tour? It wouldn't make sense for her to pick us up, take us to her place, take us back into town, pick us up again, etc etc etc you get the picture. We cannot rent a car. Thanks for any suggestions you have.

there is no checked baggage at the Cortona station at the bottom of the hill. What I suggest you try is emailing some of the hotels in Cortona and asking what they would charge you to hold your bags for the day.

As mentioned, there is no luggage storage available at the train station. However, there is a tourist information office in town and you can check to see if they may be able to hold it. You can also check with some of the main hotels in the main part of town such as San Luca and San Michele; I'm sure one of them will be glad to store it for you, even if for a small fee if you are not staying as a guest. Enjoy your trip!

Another idea is to go to lunch at a local restaurant and ask the proprietor to hold your luggage whilst you explore the town.

Your best bet is to contact the TI office in Cortona, which is only a minute or so flat walk from Piazza Garibaldi where your hostess should drop you off. They may store your bags while you visit the town, especially if you offer to pay a small storage fee and buy your bus tickets to the train station from them (bus leaves from Piazza Garibaldi). Cortona TI office's e-mail is [email protected].
