Cortona and Cars

Thanks in advance for any information and assistance offered. Our family would like to attend a conference held at the Opera House theatre in Cortona. My 78 year old mother would love to go but she has some difficulty walking up hilly roads. If we lodge outside of town, is it possible to drive into Cortona and drop off near the theatre? Or are there taxis that could drive her close? It's been a life long dream of her's to visit Italy so I'm trying to make it happen.

Assuming we are talking about the teatro Signorelli, that area is closed to non resident traffic. A taxi can take you to the theatre however.
If one parks the car (or drops the mother) on Piazza Garibaldi, the walk to the theatre on Via Nazionale is on flat ground.

susan,

I vaguely recall that there's a car park just off Viale Cesare Battisti (Parcheggio dello Spirito Santo?), which is on the way up the hill to the city. From the lot, walk across the street and it's a short uphill walk to access two Escalators (assuming they're working?), which will take you up to Piazza Garibaldi. From there it's a fairly level walk into the main part of the city. You may find this helpful - http://www.en.cortonaguide.com/cortona__22.html .

There are ZTL (limited traffic) zones in the city, so driving to the theatre would not be a good idea. The ZTL on Via Nazionale which goes to Piazza della Repubblica (on the way to the theatre?) is in effect from 10:00 - 04:00. There wouldn't be any room to drive through there anyway, due to tables for sidewalk cafes, etc. during business hours. It's a very narrow street. There may be other routes to the theatre, I didn't check.

Of course, if you were to stay in Cortona the process would be much easier. Have a look at this hotel to see if it might work - http://www.sanlucacortona.com/en/ .
