Hello does anyone know how much construction will be going on in and around Cortina /Val Gardena this summer and fall for the up coming Olympics in 2026 and how disruptive it will be for tourists with road construction etc ?
We have finally learned to avoid areas under construction for next year’s Olympics. It is not a good time to plan a visit there.
Jumping in here with a question…we were planning to begin our Italy trip in the Dolomites and Lake Garda area this September. I had no idea about the Olympic preparations. Am I to assume the general area will be disrupted with construction?
We are also planning an Italy trip in September, starting in the Dolomites. What's the best way to find out more about Olympics-related construction going on in the area?
I would avoid the area till AFTER the Olympics.
It sounds like the main Olympic Village will be constructed in Cortina and the other in Milan. I've been told they will be building tunnels that will affect the Dolomites and Lake Como traffic . . . and there will likely be more crowds trying to avoid the jubilee events in Rome (like we are!). We've decided to go ahead and start our trip in the eastern Dolomites, but instead of staying in Cortina, we've booked a place in another town and hoping we'll avoid some of the construction.
So, I have booked five days in Cortina at the end of July for a hiking base town.
From the previous replies, I understand that the bobsled track construction to be ongoing this summer but away from the main pedestrian area of town. I have also looked at several webcams and can see several construction cranes. This doesn't bother us as it is common in the Colorado mountain towns where we often stay.
I have not seen any information on major road closures that would affect access to town or the trailheads we will need to reach.
If anyone here is local to the area, or visited recently, please let me know if I am incorrect and need to change plans.
We have previously state in Ortisei for an earlier week of hiking but if anyone feels strongly about another spectacular hiking base, please let me know. I did consider the Corvara in Badia area but the hiking seems much further out of town.
Grazie!
I read a AP News article dated February 12,2025 saying the Olympic opening ceremonies for the winter games will be in the stadium in Cortina. That stadium is reportedly only half-completed. Google up the AP News Article “ The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics are One Year Away. One Venue is Uncertain.”
The iOC is worried the deadline to build tracks for the bobsled, luge and other events will not be done in time for the February games. Construction is so far behind schedule that the IOC is making back-up plans to move some events to Lake Placid, New York ( Yes-New York)! where the tracks from its 1980 Olympics can be used.
So, the construction in Cortina will likely be going on for the rest of this year and even beyond.

It’s very strange for this major news agency to be so completely wrong. The Opening Ceremony will be in the San Siro football stadium in Milan. The closing ceremony will be held in the Arena di Verona

BTW, this is not some last minute change because another stadium isn’t ready in time. Both venues were appointed right from the get go.
Correction: It is the Bobsled and Luge sliding track that is way behind construction schedule in Cortina. There are 180 construction workers working from 9am to 1 am— 16 hours a day— so that it might be completed by next February.
There also is construction going on to build the Olympic Village in Cortina. No idea how many construction workers are involved. Perhaps Dutch Traveler knows how many construction workers are building the Olympic Village.in Cortina.
The fact remains that there will be construction going on for most of this year in Cortina d’ Ampezzo with all the attendant noise and disruption that goes with it.
