Cortina D'Ampezzo - Falzarego - Marmolade/Punta Rocca

Hello! I’ll be on the Dolomites end august, early september for 9 nights (4 at Ortisei and 5 at Cortina, probably).

Looking up some driving routes on the Dolomites, and would like some opinions on routes to the Marmolade (Punta Rocca). Right now was thinking of:

  • Early morning from Cortina – Passo Falzarego (SR48) – Cernadoi (SR203) – Sottoguda – Punta Rocca – Afternoon back through Passo Giau (SP638), maybe enjoy the sunset - Back to Cortina.

This would allow me to drive routes not covered on the rest of my itinerary. Already had so much I would like to do closer to Val Gardena, so I inteded to get here from Cortina.

I've done a bunch of driving up and down mountainous areas, all in southern Brazil (and a week up and down hilltop towns in Tuscany and Grossetto, through some secondary and narrow roads, last year, although I know it is not the same as being in the Dolomites). Thought I’ll be fine at other passes on the Dolomites while looking at google maps or videos.

That said, I confess that I got a little uneasy while looking at the Passo/Pian Falzarego route (SR48) and decided to do a some research, but googling it I didn’t find any forum comments or topics about this route, or even videos (most people seem to go visit Valparola Pass after Falzarego and go to Marmolade from Ortisei, Canazei or Bolzano).

Is it a ok/safe/nice route to go from Cortina? Or do you have any appointments or sugestions?

Thanks

Roads in that entire region are very windy. Since you are going during peak season, they will likely be very busy. Don't rely on Google Maps for driving time, which does not account for slower driving and taking breaks to enjoy the scenery.

I drove that route a couple of times in a fiat panda (yes) and it's no trouble. Rain could make it a bit harder but nothing to be scared about if you drive carefully.

If I were you'd stay longer in Cortina, it's an absolute gem!
