correct way to buy trenitalia tickets

Coming closer to time when we can hopefully purchase cheaper tickets for train travel and just want to be sure doing so properly. Train trip is scheduled for Sept 4th. Am I correct in my thinking? Purchase 2 adults tickets on high speed train from santa lucia venezia to Milano Centrale. Then purchase 2 adult tickets from Milano Centrale on high speed train, for departure as soon as possible after arrival (leaving enough time to get from one track to another) going to Genova Statione Principe. We plan to spend some time at the port in Genova and will then take another train to our final destination that day in Monterosso. Would the train leaving Genova late afternoon also be a high speed train? Have registered already on Trenitalia and find it really confusing but determined to get those lower rates if possible. Thanks for any and all help.

Yes, trenitalia is confusing. I am 90% sure that you will be taking a slower 'regionale' train between Genova and Monterosso. I can't find any high-speed ones.

First, have you changed your temporary registration password? I think you have 48 hours to do that, but if you haven't, click on "Forgot Password" and trenitalia will email it to you within seconds. Second, you can buy one ticket, from Venezia Santa Lucia to Genova Stazione Principe; it will include a transfer in Milano Centrale. The advantage to buying one ticket is that if the train into Milano is late and you miss your connection, your onward portion of the ticket will be honored (but you need to go to a ticket window to sort it out). This has happened to me, and depending on the line at the ticket window it can take a couple of minutes or much longer. If you can see the Customer Care Center, you can have it taken care of there (shorter lines, if any, but usually more complex issues so you may still have some waiting time). There are direct Intercity or Regionale trains from Genova Stazione Principe to Monterosso (journey takes about 75-95 minutes.

Thanks for the info and yes Zoe, I have changed my password. Your info about the transfer was what I was wondering and makes sense. Would the regionale train to Monterosso depart from Statione Principe also?
