Correct Electrical Adaptors for Italy

Does anyone know what type of electrical adaptors are suitable for Venice, Florence, and Rome? I purchased a Type L with 3 prongs, but I see another 2 pronged type for sale on Rick Steves website shop for Continental Europe. Is it easier to buy them in Italy?

Easier here. Two prong adapters have worked for me for charging electronics.

Two prong adaptors are used for Continental Europe. The U.K. has different one. Buy them at ricksteves.com, a luggage store or outdoor store. Take several along in case you leave one in an outlet during your trip.

Just be sure the device you are plugging in is dual voltage. Most are now, but it doesn't hurt to double check. If the device says something like 110-240v you should be ok without a converter, but you'll still need the adaptor.

Two prong adaptors are used for Continental Europe. The U.K. has different one, triangle shaped, three flat prongs. Buy them at ricksteves.com, a luggage store or outdoor store. Take several along in case you leave one behind in an outlet during your trip.
I bought several this spring from Rick Steves when he had them on sale for $1.00.

For 2 pronged plugs, the ones Rick sells will work fine in Italy. This same 2 pronged adapter works all over Continental Europe (as you have been told, you need a different adapter for the UK and Ireland).

However, for 3 pronged plugs, there is a unique plug for Italy; that's the Type L, with 3 round prongs in a line. Many Italian hotels will also have outlets that accommodate the Type F and Type G 3 pronged plugs used in various other European countries, but not all will.

So, if you have a 2 pronged plug device (such as a phone charger), Rick's adapter is fine. If you have a 3 pronged plug device (like many laptops), you should get the Type L plug adapter.

I'd suggest packing along at least a couple of the two-pin Euro Plug Adapters as they're small and easy to misplace. This is the type that will work in many parts of Europe.....

As you've already bought a three-pin grounded Plug Adapter, pack that along as well as it will also work with two-pin plugs.

As someone else mentioned, it's extremely important to check all of the devices you'll be travelling with to ensure they're designed for use from 100-240 VAC. Look for the words Input Voltage on the chargers. That's generally the case with electronic products like cell phones these days, but it should still be checked.

We bought a European power strip. You just plug in your devices-no adapter needed. Best travel idea ever!
