Corpus Christi in Rome

Hi, everyone!

I will be in Rome with my husband, 18-year-old son and 8-year old son from June 17 to June 22. So, we will be there on Corpus Christi (Thursday, June 19). The Pope does mass at St John Lateran and then there is a procession to Santa Maria Maggiore.

We would like to attend the mass and also join the procession to Santa Maria Maggiore, where there is an eucharistic blessing, but I wonder if this would be too complicated.

  • Is it easy to attend the mass? How early should we get to St John Lateran? Is there a better place to be?

  • Is it possible/advisable for our family to join the procession to Santa Maria Maggiore? What's the best way to do it?

  • When the procession arrives at Santa Maria Maggiore is there still room for everybody? (I suppose there will be a lot of people already there.)

  • Can anyone help us with the questions above? Does anyone have any tips for Corpus Christi in Rome?

I've been looking for tips on the Internet, but there's not much about it. So, I would really appreciate any piece of advice! :-)

Mass will be at 7pm. On the official Vatican web site I found a form to request tickets for Papal Mass. Somewhere else I read that you will need to be there 1-3 hours in advance depending on what type of seat you want. I want to go but that is our last day in Rome. We are planning on Wednesday audience. I am trying to talk my family in maybe going to Mass instead on Wednesday morning.

If this is important to you, then muscle in there with the crowd and experience it! After you've seen the Pope once, you can probably check him off your list.

I went to Rome for Easter two years ago, and it was one of the highlights of my life! It rained the entire three days before, but I still did Mass at St. Peters on Holy Thursday and Friday and Easter Mass with the Pope (along with 100,000 other people)! It was cloudy and cool, but no rain. We went @8AM for the 10AM mass and got a great seat! It was fantastic. I would strongly urge you to take advantage of this maybe once in a lifetime experience!

My husband who didn't go with me, couldn't believe that I would WANT to be with 100,000 people crammed into St. Peter's Square, but I DID want to!

I wish I could be there for this experience too. Maybe someday!
