Copenhagen then Rome/Herculanuem/Pompeii or switch it up?

Greetings helpful seasoned travelers! We are traveling from the u.s. to Copenhagen staying one night then flying Copenhagen to Rome on Saturday May 5th, arriving around 1 p.m. We have Sat late afternoon and evening, Sun, and Monday to hopefully see the following: Colosseo above and underground, the Forum and crypts in Rome, and at least 3 hours each in Pompeii and Herculanuem. We understand Sundays are free and crowded. So would you advise:
1. staying in Rome Saturday and Sunday taking a late train to Pompeii, spending the night and seeing Pompeii and Herculaneum on Monday, or
2. Heading straight to Pompeii late Saturday afternoon, seeing what we can until closing, staying the night, early Sunday am more Pompeii, then Herculaneum, Sunday night and Monday in Rome?
Thank you for any and all input!

Can your provide a bit more context around what you are describing (which sounds like you are going to Europe for about 4 days)? Where are you going after your 2 days in Italy? Have you been to Italy before (have you been to Europe before)? When (what month) are you proposing to do this?

In general, doing Pompei as a day trip from Rome is certainly possible, but not a great way to go IMHO. But a lot depends on context.

Just asking because what you are proposing does not sound rational to me (more than just the Pompei as a day trip from Rome question) -- I'm hoping there is more to your story.

May 4 arrive Rome, train to Pompeii night of May 5 or early morning May 6, late train to Florence for 3 days, 2 days in Venice, then drop off our son and relax- we have a week to meander through Northern Italy, Switzerland and Bordeaux before flying home from Paris. Trains and buses preferred. Any suggestions?
