We have read and heard the underground and third tier Colosseum Tour is a must and money saver through Coopculture. We planned on booking tickets for our family of 5 on July 29th of this year. On their website is does say something about this tour open from January of 2016 through June 2017. I've also read that they don't open up tour reservations more than a couple to a few months before. What I am wondering is, will this opportunity not offered after June 2017? Or is it just a function of booking too early? I have sent the company a few emails, but have not heard back. I haven't called since it is in Italy. Any help would be great.
In regards to the June 2017 question, someone else will have to answer that.
The tours open up the third Monday of the month before you are visiting Rome. For instance: today at 9 am Rome time was the first day to purchase for April. Here's a hint...make sure to get online to purchase the tickets on Rome time. They will sell out if you wait until 9 am your time.
I, too, have a question about purchasing the Third Tier/Underground tickets. I plan to do this tomorrow....and I have already purchased the entrance tickets to the Colosseum. My question is this: when I go on Coopculture and select 'buy tickets' for the Third Tier/Underground, the first choice is TICKET ONLINE - GUIDED ENTRANCE (BUY NOW). However, below that, it gives options for tours in English, Spanish, and Italian....it says, GUIDED TOURS IN ENGLISH (BUY NOW). Which do I want? If I just buy the Guided entrance for 9 Euro + 2 Euro reservation fee, doesn't that infer a guided tour already? Why are there then language specific options below that? It doesn't make sense. As I said, I already purchased the entry tickets to the Colosseum itself so just need the Third Tier/Underground tickets. I know I don't have time to mess around when it comes time to buy them as they sell out fast. Has anyone done this recently? If you can help, I'd appreciate it.
Krislyn, I'm pretty sure that the "TICKET ONLINE - GUIDED ENTRANCE" option is for people who haven't already purchased the required general-entry ticket or intend to purchase one when they arrive for their tour. All you need to buy is the guided tour in English: THAT's the one you need to book as quickly as you can once available.
Just be sure not to use up the single Colosseum entry allowed with your general-entry ticket before your tour.
I'd like to see some others weigh in on this, though. (Donna? You out there?).
There really is no guided entry. If you click on any of the dates only red boxes come up. It's an old category they just didn't remove from the website.
What you need to buy is the guided tour in English and entry tickets if you don't already have them. Just ignore the "guided entrance" option. It has nothing to do with the tours.

Well, there ya go!
Thanks Donna; I was wondering about that too but didn't think it applied.
Piggy-backing on this topic:
So if I plan to get a Roma pass when I arrive and use one free entrance at the Colosseum , I would buy the Coopculture tour tickets for a July visit promptly on June 19 Rome time (so June 18 middle-of-the-night U.S. time)?
I tried for 3 1/2 hours (starting at 9 am Italy time) to get a May reservation for the Underground tour. Site keeps saying that I need a ticket for the actual Colosseum. I put that in my cart, but it still said I needed it to get the U. Tour. So...I paid for the main admission, hoping it would NOW allow me to reserve an U. Tour. No luck. It still keeps coming up that I also need a ticket for the other. Frustrating! Any advice?
Jessica, you can use the romapass for the entry part but will still need to be online at 9am Rome time to book the tour.
Vawn, I'm not sure what's going on. I just did a dummy booking and it went through to the payment page with nothing being said about entry tickets. Perhaps try another browser.

This is my plan - just checking to see if Im on the right track. Thank you Donna. So, as far as you know, when I go on the coop culture website in June to book, I will not need to have evidence of an entrance ticket already?
I'm also struggling with the colosseum tickets. I've been staying up every Sunday night hoping they would put the whole summer on at once, like I've heard they occasionally do. I'm glad to learn about the third Monday clue so I can sleep the first two Sunday nights of May while waiting for June to open up.
As a quick note, their NIGHT openings are available already for June, at least. Unfortunately, I didn't know they were already out and now the weekend nights are all booked, but there is a lot of availability for weekdays still. I believe the night tours also go to the underground, but it doesn't mention the third tier.
Eric, they won't release tickets other than on the third Monday of each month, unless there is a holiday and then it will be a Tuesday when they are released. You don't need to get up every Sunday as there will be no new releases. The night tours do not include the third tier nor do they give you entry to the forum/palatine hill. They are a special event.
Ciaran, you do not need to purchase entry tickets in order to book the underground tour. It does give you a reminder that you must book tickets but you don't need to book them when you book the underground tour.
The Italian version of the site is showing the same openings as the English version. There are single tickets available for several days in May for the English tour. Both the Italian and Spanish tours have openings.

Thanks, Donna. Your input on the boards is very much appreciated. I now have two extra nights of good sleep next month.
