Does anyone know if the COOP supermarkets are open to the public or membership only? I'm looking for a supermarket in Rome to purchase basics for our self catering apartment.
Open to the public, I shop there often. There is a PAM chain with stores in Roma as well.
COOP supermarkets are open to the public. There are supermarkets in close proximity all over Rome, so you'll have no problem shopping.
Wow, thank you guys. That's great news!
Coop will certainly help you in sticking to your budget...especially in super expensive Switzerland.
I have found them be well stocked with a nice variety of products even in some of the smallest out of the way places. And no membership required.
My knowledge is limited to mostly shopping there but COOP in Italy does not have the same meaning as co-op in the US. COOP is the largest supermarket chain in Italy and is very old. Thinking like Safeway, Krogers, etc.
The corporate structure is similar to a Credit Union. Members (soci) are owners of the company, but anybody can shop in it.
Coop was founded in 1854.
they are like a Super WalMart in the USA the big ones sell all kinds of stuff - not just food
It's pronounced coop as in a chicken coop, rather than co-op. As others have said, no membership required.
