Are Convents in Rome a good idea for families and families with teenagers? Since lodging is so expensive and it's hard to find apartments or family suites, how are convents and which ones? K in Yakima
We looked into it briefly, but they frown on any horseplay, have strict curfews, etc.
I have stayed at the small hotel, Domus Aurelia, which is in an excellent location, right near the Vatican. It is run by a religious group, but it's a great place to stay. Google it for information.

Did you try VRBO.com for apartments? I found for the 4 of us that apartments were a cheaper option than hotels or convents. Some have 2 bedrooms, many have 1 bedroom and a sleeper sofa. We found a 2 bedroom in Rome for 135E a night. It's got A/C and a washer.
We also considered a convent for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) but found an apartment on vrbo.com in Ostia, near the coast, and a 1 euro, 30 minute train ride into Termini. It is reasonable and the owner has been quite helpful and speaks English. We leave soon but we're excited to have an apt. with a view, and away from the conjestion.

(By the way, we did book a convent in Florence.)
We book an apartment just a few blocks from the Vatican in Rome on the river. Here is the landlord's e-mail: [email protected] or
go to http://cross-pollinate.com. We had 5 people in our party and it worked great. Plus, we could go to the store and stock the refrigerator so our food bill was low. I would do the apartment thing again.
Karen,
We are going to be in Rome with our teen daughter in June and have reservations at Casa il Rosario. It does have an 11pm curfew but I figure by then we will be tired from all the sightseeing. It is near the Colosseum and Forum and we have a triple room for 110E. That includes breakfast and an ensuite shower and w/c. A few on this site recommended it to me and Trip Advisor had some good reviews too. We leave 08 June and return on 30 June so I will post feedback then.
Have fun! Michelle
