Convents in & around Rome

I am looking for an inexpensive hotel or B&B in Rome but will need to make sure an elevator is available as my elderly father will be with me. Has anyone stayed in any of the convents in or around Rome? I understand the rooms are clean and reasonable but perhaps not in a convenient location. Could anyone provide any info or share their experience. Happy travels!

If you are looking for inexpensive accomodations with an elevator, check out Bed and Breakfast Smart. They have an elevator and I think that you can get a room with shared bath for 89 euros per night.

Hi Jerri,
We stayed in Casa per Ferie Santa Maria alle Fornaci dei Padri Trinitari--the rooms are very simple and spotlessly clean. It's very near the Vatican but a little off the beaten path. I'm pretty sure they have an elevator but you should check with them to be sure.

Jerri--I also had a good experience with Casa Maria Alle Fornaci. There is an elevator and it's about 3 blocks from a train station (about 1 block of this is uphill). My dad uses a cane because of knee problems and thought the location was fine.

I've also stayed at the Casa La Salle. It's a bit outside of the city center but within two flat blocks to the metro. I thought it was actually a bit nicer than the Casa Maria alle Fornaci but both were clean and a great price inside the city!

Hi: I'm not sure what your budget allows but I spent a month in Italy a few years back. There were two of us and we'd planned to stay 2 weeks until a friend gave us a book called "Lodging in Italy's Monasteries", by Eileen Barish. We made all our reservations through that and could extend our trip to a month because we saved so much on lodging ...and the accommodations were always very clean and pleasant. In Rome we stayed in Centro Diffusione Spiritualita in Trasteveri (just a 10 minute walk to the Vatican). Kind of dormitory style but very clean and really inexpensive.

We stayed at

Minime Suore Del Sacro "Beata M. Margherita Caiani" Via Fabio Massimo, 26 00192, ROMA

Tel: 06 324.2853 or 06 324.2984 e-mail: [email protected]

The convent had an elevator. Our room had a full private bath as well as a private balcony (amazing)! Other than an English barrier, our experience was wonderful.

I booked the convent through monasterystays.com. I don't recommend using them to book, but take a look at the pictures of the place on the site. Also, I suggest booking via e-mail. Someone who speaks english sent us a confirmation e-mail.

Good luck!
