We will be in Florence area in a few short weeks. Our son will be arriving in Florence a day later and we will need to pick him up near the train station. Does anyone know of a convenient spot that we can pre-arrange so that we drive by and pick him up, while also avoiding the ZTL zones?

Park in the underground garage in front of the station. You can drive to the station. .You can reach the station piazza from either via Jacopo da Diacceto on the western side (via Alamanni is closed for road work) or from via Nazionale.
Then walk upstairs. Meet him at the head of Track number (agree to a track number, there are 16 at SMN), then together walk to the car and drive away. To exit the parking garage turn right toward the Deanna bar, take via S. Caterina da Siena, turn right to Via della Scala and then straight to Viale Rosselli.

I do have another question for you. We will be picking up our rental car on Via Maso Finiguerra and then driving to Impruneta. It has been suggested by our host that we skirt the historic district and drive out of Porta Romana. What would you suggest to be the best way to do this?
If you need to meet your son before driving to Impruneta, first pick up your son, then rent the car. Go to the station, meet your son, then all together with your son, from the station walk to the rental office on via Maso da Finiguerra (5 min), rent the car, and drive away.
