Construction on A1 in Italy

Hello, We are headed to Italy on 7/3/11. For a portion of our visit in Italy we are renting a car that we'll be driving from Rome to Sorrento and back. We'll be driving mostly on the A1. My in-laws are just getting back from Italy, today in fact. They spent their time in Northern Italy, but spoke with their guide about our upcoming trip and were informed that the construction South of Rome is terrible right now and they advised that we not drive at all. They think we should scrap the car and take the train instead. I've searched everywhere, as well as extensively on the autostrade.it website and cannot find that there is anything major construction-wise going on between Rome and Naples/Sorrento. If anybody on this board has driven this stretch recently or if someone lives in the area, would you have more accurate information? Many thanks,
Emy

Emy, are you planning on driving anywhere other than Rome to Sorrento and back? If not, I would ditch the car idea and take the train. Seems to me to be much easier and cheaper and more relaxing!

For a question asking for this type of info, you have a better chance of getting an answer from a local by going here and then going to forums located along the A1 route you plan to follow, and asking your question on those forums.

For what its worth I did that drive last Sept and it's not bad at all. I don't know what the current situation is but in general when they do roadwork on the autostrada it's a minimal impact. Italians (I assume the guide was Italian) tend to make a bigger deal out of traffic than is warrented. I've been hearing for a year and a half how bad it is on A14 in Bologna.....even the worst time I spent in traffic there compares nothing at all to I15 in Vegas or I20/75 in Atlanta during rush hour.
