Connection Time Needed in FCO between Delta and ITA

I am planning a trip to Italy in May, 2022. I will be flying from Atlanta, on Delta, to Rome FCO. I am then connecting to ITA (Alitalia Replacement) on a separate ticket to Palermo. I could not book through because of former Delta partner, Alitalia shutting down. How much connection time should I allow?
Because I can't check luggage through to Palermo, I will have to go through customs and immigration and then go through the check-in in process with ITA. There is a flight with a 2 hour connection that I would love to book but, I am hesitant. The later flight would be a 7 hour connection time. I think ITA is using Alitalia gates in terminal 1 and Delta comes arrives in Terminal 3. If anyone has any knowledge of this situation please let me know. Thanks,

There is a flight with a 2 hour connection that I would love to book but, I am hesitant.

And for good reason.

As ITA just started operations there is no historical data anyone would be able to offer.

A 2 hr DIY separate ticket transfer is a gold plated invitation for disaster.

With no checked luggage you might have the snowball in satan's domicile chance, but with checked baggage, your chances of success are only theoretically better than zero

Do you have the time or interest in spending time in Rome? The safe option would be to spend one or more nights in Rome.

Otherwise I wouldn’t take the chance without having at least 4 hours between flights. Since your long haul flights are many months away it’s possible that you may have one or more schedule changes. So keep that in mind.

BTW it appears that Ryanair also flys that route. Perhaps their schedule works better for you. If you go with them do take care to understand all their rules and fees.

I like to use skyscanner to see who flies the route I’m interested in. Then book directly with the airline.
