Connection time needed at Rome (FCO) airport

We are U.S. citizens and will have been in Croatia for 10 days.
We will be flying (with checked luggage) from Split, Croatia to Rome (FCO) and then Rome (FCO) to Bari, Italy.
1. I don't believe Croatia is part of the Schengen area countries, does this mean we will need to go through passport control at FCO?
2. Would 1 hr 15minutes be enough time to get to our next flight (Alitalia) or do we need to book a flight with a longer layover time for FCO?
3. Also I can book the flights separately (SPI-FCO and then FCO-BRI) and save $200 a ticket, but does this mean we would have to pick up our checked bags in FCO and recheck them or is there a way of getting the bags checked all the way through to Bari (BRI)?

Thank you for your help!

1-- Croatia is NOT a Schengen country--- you will need to go through passport control

2- VERY unlikely 75 minutes is adequate, especially if you have to retrieve and re-check baggage

3- Separate tickets would mean luggage retrieval and re-check.

PS--The code for Split , is SPU--- (SPI is Springfield Illinois)--- be careful when you do the booking, or your flight may last a lot longer than you intended :-)

Did you consider ferry to Ancona and train to Bari?
