Connecting to Orvieto from Perugia/Assisi

Ok, we'll be in Rome in March and are thinking of taking 2 - 3 days out to Assisi and Perugia, but would love to revisit Orvieto, and maybe Civita. Doing the whole train loop from Perugia up, changing stations, and then going back down to Orvieto does not look like the best way to spend our time/money. Surely there's a bus from Assisi or Perugia across to Orvieto? I am looking at Rick Steves' Italy book and he makes no mention of Perugia at all. We would do Cortona, but were there last year and want to visit some new places. Thanks! Cheryl

There is a DIRECT (no changes, no connections) bus from Perugia Piazza Partigiani (bus depot) at 14:05 daily except Sundays (departure five minutes later from the Trenitalia train station), going to Orvieto Trenitalia train station AND Orvieto Piazza Cahen (up the hill). One-way fare is 6.85 Euros. OTHERWISE, you can take Trenitalia from Perugia to Orvieto, with a required connection in Terontola. The one-way fare by train is 7.10 Euros (assuming both trains are regionales), and the travel time will be about the same as the bus. From the Orvieto station, there is a funicular up the hill to Piazza Cahen. OPINION: The bus is more convenient, because it avoids having to take local transportation in Perugia and in Orvieto to reach the respective Trenitalia train stations. However, there is only one bus daily, and no bus service on Sundays. From Orvieto (Piazza Cahen and Trenitalia train station) to Bagnoregio (new town), there are nine COTRAL bus runs daily except on Sundays. You can walk from the bus stop in Bagnoregio to Civita' ghost town in about 20-25 minutes (across the famous footbridge). www.atcterni.it http://www.atcterni.it/inv10/extra%20orvieto.pdf www.ferroviedellostato.it www.cotralspa.it http://www.cotralspa.it/PDF_Orari_Comune/Bagnoregio.pdf
