Connecting flight in Rome with Alitalia

We are traveling from Chicago to Rome with a connecting flight to Naples with Alitalia. Can someone please tell me the process. I have read that all we need to do is follow the signs for connecting flights as long as we have our boarding pass and luggage is transferred by the airline. We will stay airside all at terminal 1. Is this correct?

Correct.
In Rome you will go through passport control and the bags will transfer to the flight to Naples.

Passport control in Rome.
Luggage checked in through NAP is retrieved at final destination (NAP) therefore don't worry about your checked luggage in Rome.
If I remember correctly you will go through security again betweeen T3 and T1, before reaching the gate to Naples. Although that may have changed since the last time I connected in Rome, but likely it's still the same.
