I'm a little confused about the connecting sequence upon arrival at Rome FCO. I'll be arriving from Alghero Sardinia at terminal 1 on Aeoritalia at 8:10 and departing on United for Newark USA at 11:00 at terminal 3. I will have carry on luggage so no need to for baggage claim. Do I need to exit the security zone and reenter or can I go directly to the terminal? Each flight was booked separate tickets. Thanks for the response.

If running two separate tickets. You will exit security. You will need to go to the international departure terminal. It has been a couple of years so I don't know if they still use a bus to take you there. You need to go through the "exit from the Schengen zone" procedures/security. That can be time consuming.
