Confused about Colosseum / Roma Pass

Hi All,
We'll be in Rome in July for three days and have been reading the Rick Steves Italy guide book. Based on his recommendations, we plan to buy a Roma Pass for each of us to skip the ticket line at the Colosseum. He also mentions that there is a counter in the Colosseum where it is possible to book a guided tour. If we enter with the Roma Pass do we then just go to the counter and pay for the guided tour, or must this be booked separately in advance?

Is this tour preferable than others?

Thank you in advance!

Are you sure a romapass is going to be of benefit to you? If getting the 72 hour pass you must visit at least 3 sites covered by the pass and ride public transportation several times in order to make the pass worthwhile. If not, just book sites individually through official websites.

As for using the pass and booking tours, I suggest you book tours online before leaving home. For the colosseum use the official website:

https://www.coopculture.it/en/colosseo-e-shop.cfm

Scroll all the way down past "underground, third ring and Belvedere tours" to the "Individual tickets with scheduled entrance time and guided tour". Choose the language of the tour you wish to take then choose your date. One the next pop up screen you'll choose "free ticket+tour+reservation". This will book you the tour but not charge you the entry fee.
