Complete circumnavigation of Sicily?

It looks like there is a road that completely circumnavigates Sicily. Has anyone on the forum done this? If you did, what towns did you stay in along the way and how long did it take? And what were the roads like?

To circumnavigate the island you need a boat.
There are several roads. All great roads, or freeways.
Of the big cities I like Palermo and Siracusa. Taormina is nice and quaint, but very touristy and expensive. I stayed in Giardini Naxos down the hill so I could also enjoy the beach. I used Scopello as a base to visit the western side (west of Palermo). Didn’t care much about the coast from Agrigento to Pozzallo. Cefalù is nice, but some prefer to visit it by train from Palermo before they pick up the car. Avoid having a car while staying in Palermo. Traffic and parking in Palermo is horrible.

We drove part of the way by the sea. It was a two lane road that went through towns. It was not very fast. I would not want to take it everywhere. This was in the south and southwest. In the north, the road I think is a four lane toll road. We had turned in our car at the Palermo airport and took the train to Cefalu which runs the same way.

The roads by the coast tend to be better than those in the interior but except in the north are all two lane roads. Think that it would be similar to taking a state highway instead of a freeway in the U.S. for a sense of what you are thinking. It would not be my idea of a good time. We were always really happy to get on the four lane tollways in Sicily (which did not have tolls where we drove them).

We were in Sicily for 14 days but only rented a car for 5. We did not see the entire island. I would think you would need at least 3 weeks for what you are proposing, probably more.

We stayed outside Catania at a military base for a couple days to get over jet lag. From there we stayed in Agrigento, Marsala, Erice, Monreale, Cefalù, Taormina, and spent the last night near Catania. Since we never made it to the Ragusa area, we technically didn’t drive completely around the island.

The roads were generally ok, but some rural roads needed some work. I felt the roads were very poorly marked as there were times I had no idea what road I was on. Google maps worked well to get to those out of the way places that don’t have addresses.

Thank you to those who responded, doing further research on this. I was hoping to drive around with an ocean view the whole time.

We also didn’t like the coastal route west of Agrigento. It was congested and I don’t remember it being scenic. My favorite drives in Sicily were in the interior. Rural roads w little traffic, then through small towns w narrow roads and buildings all crammed together on a hilltop, or on the side of a hill. You would see a town in the distance and think, there is no way the road leads there, but sure enough, it did. Don’t do this if you are in a hurry.
