Compatsch: Village amenities and accommodations.

My husband and I will be spending Sept 2014 in the Dolomites hiking. We would like Compatsch (Seiser Alm) to be our first base village. So far I have not been able to locate any small pension (under 20 rooms) preferably with halfboard. Can any of you recommend an accommodation or a website to help locate a pension?

Also, what amenities are available in Compatsch? Is there a grocery to stock up on picnic supplies or does one need to go down the cable car to Castlerotto? Any information would be appreciated.

We were through there this past September. I remember seeing a couple hotels, a few shops and restaurants. Actually, the place is very small. The RS guide book says "you'll find a tiny grocery store, ATMs, hotels, restaurants, and shops." Look at the Italy guidebook for details. Good luck.

It is very tiny, although there are several lodging establishments. Rather than restrict yourself to Compatsch, consider looking at the larger Alpe di Siusi. You can search Trip Advisor and Booking.com using "Alpe di Siusi." Many of the hotels are served by bus or gondola. We stayed at Hotel Saltria last summer: half board, but larger than 20 rooms. Loved it! Next summer we are eyeing Hotel Panorama, served by a lift. Staying in the Alpe is great for longer day hikes as you avoid the "commute" up from the valley. There are also rifugi you can hike to and stay in, but they probably are not good bases (although they are charming!).

If you choose to stay in the valley -- which is delightful -- rather than Castelrotto, look at Ortisei in the Val Gardenia. Get a Val Gardena Pass and you can take lifts all over the Val Gardena to various hiking venues. I wrote about our trip last summer here and also here.

Thanks Galen and Lauren. We want to begin on the western side of the Alpi as we will move over to Alta Badia then onto Cortina. Your descriptions help.
