Comparing Highspeed travel on Italo vs Trenitalia

Hello Italy Savvy Folks,

My husband and I will be in Italy next month (Oct '24). We are, currently, exploring our highspeed train travel options from Rome to Pompeii / Rome to Assisi / Rome to Venice / Venice to Florence / Florence to Rome.

After a quick peek at the RS Travel Forums I was able to find a thread from 2019. My guess is that it is likely that much (some?) has changed in the interim.

Here's hoping someone has more recent information to share with us.

Thanks in advance for your input!

What sort of info are you looking for?

Trenitalia is the official train company that runs fast trains and regional trains

ItaloTreno is a private train company that runs only fast trains in selected routes

Both are comparable, book with whichever suits your schedule
Purchase tix from the official sites
Both have easy to use apps
Some nice discounts with advanced purchase if sure if your dates
Read the rules for change, refunds etc

https://www.trenitalia.com/content/tcom/en.html

https://www.italotreno.com/en

No fast train to Pompeii-you can fast train to Naples then change to local Circumvesuviana to Pompeii

No fast trains to Assisi

Man in Seat 61 has all the info you’ll need

We have been to Italy 3 times in the past 2 years, and are going again in a week. So we have “recent information”.

For the high-speed trains, I look at both Italo and Trenitalia, and see which has the better schedule for our needs, and/or the better price. I like to buy online at least a month in advance to take advantage of the discounts offered, but note that the discounted tickets, whether they be “super economy”, “Magic”, or “2 for 1”, come with restrictions—-generally they cannot be refunded or changed. So be sure you understand the conditions before choosing. Some of the intermediate categories of discount can be modified (changed to a different time or date) for a fee.

Note that to use the Senior discount price on Trenitalia you have to have a CartaFreccia. Do not choose the Senior ticket price unless you each have that card. Italo has no such restriction on Senior tickets, so often that is the best price.

On Trenitalia, even using the English site, you must enter the cities by their Italian name (i.e., Roma not Rome; Firenze not Florence). If you get the first 3 letters it will usually show a drop-down menu with choices starting with those letters. But if you start to write Flo….it will never offer Firenze.

Right now, looking at a random date in mid-October (15 October) for tickets from Roma Termini to Venezia Santa Lucia, for 2 tickets in 2d class, the best deal on Trenitalia is the Freccia 2X1 (2 for 1) fare which is 92 euro for 2 people.

Italo has a 2-for-1 price of 86 euros for the 2 tickets; but the better deal is the Senior fare of 34 euro, or 68 for 2 people.

What everyone here has said is great and the only thing I'd add is that .Italo only runs certain routes and only runs fast trains. If you are only transferring between big cities this is fine but when you want to go Rome to Pisa booking on Trenitalia will get you both tickets - fast train Rome to Florence and the local train to Pisa. If you want to use .Italo then you will beed to book them Rome to Florence and then figure out he best train connection onto Lucca from there on Trenitalia. It is mostly a convenience thing but it is still something to think about.

Many people report having an easier experience in English on the .Italo site versus Trenitalia where you generally need to use the Italian names for places - Roma, Firenze etc. Other than that they use the same tracks and have pretty equivalent trains.

Have a great trip,

Lola mentions the bit I forgot- you need to know the Italian station names:

Roma Termini

Napoli Centrale (local ticket on Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi has to be purchased at station)

Venezia S Lucia
Firenze SM Novella

Assisi-- (Assisi Centro would include the bus ride up to town)
