Companies fined for hoarding Colosseum tickets

Just read this article dated today in The Local (paywall):

"Italy's competition watchdog said it had fined the firm handling tickets for Rome's Colosseum and 6 tour operators 'almost 20 million euros' for hoarding tickets, a practice which forced tourists to pay more for admission."

"The investigation was launched in July 2023, after the ACGM watchdog discovered that buying tickets online for the ancient amphitheatre was 'essentially impossible", it said.

"CoopCulture, which managed the official ticket sale service for access to the Colosseum from 1997 until 2024, was fined 7 million euros for 'knowingly contributing to the substantial and prolonged unavailability of base-priced tickets for entry to the Colosseum', the ACGM said."

"Tourists were 'forced...to turn to tour operators and platforms that resold tickets bundled with additional services...at much higher prices."

"The watchdog also fined 6 tour operators who used automated tools to purchase tickets from CoopCulture....the operators were named as Tiquets International BV; GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH; Walks LLC; Italy with Family srl; City Wonders Limited; and Musement spa."

The ticketing nightmare was a reason for the change from Coopculture to the current vendor. In addition to the reported hoarding, the schedules for ticket sales were changed more often than my socks, and were ridiculously, needlessly confusing. The new site was a welcome improvement, IMHO.

Pleased to see hands responsible for the previous mess formally and expensively slapped.
