My husband and I are flying into Milan and would like to stay in Como or Varenna in Oct. What tours or sightseeing can we do in this area? Is it possible from either one of these towns to plan a trip on the Bernina Express?
Approximately when in October, which part of the month?
Reason for the question is, October is a transition month there, transition between the tourist season on the one hand, and things being pretty much closed up.
We are flying into Milan on October 15th and leaving Venice on Oct 24th.
Judy,
I don't know of any "organized" tours or sightseeing in either location. However, I'd suggest staying in Varenna, as it's a good "home base" for exploring Bellagio or other communities along the lake (if that's what you were interested in?).
For a trip on the Bernina Express, you'd have to get to Lugano. Were you planning to travel the entire route of the Express, or just part way? Staying in Como might be better in that case, as it's only about 1.5 hours from there to Lugano.
Cheers!
Judy: This link (below) summarizes the actual weather for the period Oct 15 to 24 for the last 12 years in nearby Lugano (closest I could find to Varenna).
I hope it helps give you realistic expectations for the most likely weather for the dates you're there

Ken, Thank you for the weather link. Its very useful since we are just trying to gather information now as we plan the trip. Maybe we'll spend more time in Milan and the surrounding area and visit the lake towns for a day or two...... Thank you.
Judy
Good idea. At that time of year, a day trip from Milan to the mid-lake region of Lake Como might be a safer and more flexible strategy: if the weather is typical or not cooperating, you're not locked into dreary days. And if the weather is better than normal, that time of year you can probably find a place in Varenna, Bellagio, or Menaggio on the spur of the moment (the 3 mid-lake destinations that are so scenic, well, actually scenic from the water in between those villages).
