Como to train to see Swiss Alps and back and drive to Bolzano Italy

Hello,

We plan to leave early in the morning from Como and take a train ride to see the the best views of the alps, then back to Como and drive to a hotel in Bolzano. Is that a reasonable journey for a day? It's hard to tell just from mapping part of the drive.

Is Como the only town where we can catch a train into the alps? If we left for the alps from another Lake Como town, could we come back on a train to land in Como, even though we didn't leave from there?

If we took a day trip on the train into the alps, can we have a luggage with us? We May not rent a car until we get back to Como.

Thank you,
Sandy

Hi,
From your multiple posts, it would help a lot if you gave us the bigger picture of your full itinerary.

Now, for your question I see a reasonable option, and a crazy (long day!) option.
Reasonable option would be to stay in Como and
- do a quick trip to Lugano with your luggage,
- leave the luggage in Lugano station lockers
- take the funicular railway up Monte San Salvatore: great views of mountains and lake Lugano.
- Then take train from Lugano to Bolzano; there is no need to rent a car to get to Bolzano.

Crazy option would be to stay in Varenna and
- take the train to Tirano
- go to the RHB station in Tirano where you leave your luggage and take the scenic Bernina Express to the Diavolezza station
- take a cable car up the mountain if you wish
- then turn around to Tirano, pick up luggage, take train to Milan, then Bolzano

Como town to somewhere in the Swiss Alps, back again and drive to Bolzano/Bozen all in one day? I would say no.
The drive to Bolzano/Bozen takes half a day, and getting to the high Alps takes half a day, and you need some time to see them.

My suggestion, take a scenic route from Como to Bolzano via the SS36 and SS38: Como - Lecco -East side of Lake Como - Tirano - Stelvio Pass - Meran/Merano - Bolzano/Bozen. And take all day getting there.
Click here for routes on via Michelin, then see option 3
Stelvio Pass -according to Wikipedia: "The Stelvio Pass . . . . is a mountain pass in northern Italy bordering Switzerland at an elevation of 2,757 m above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps".

P.S., why are you starting from Como town? If you want to see Lake Como, that is not the best place to stay.

Sandy, you posted of bunch of questions on the Switzerland Forum, many questions were about Italy, and you have now deleted those. It sounded like your original plan was to fly to Zurich, drive/train to Como, then Dolomites, Florence, Tuscany, etc.

Why don't you post a new question on the General Europe Forum. Put in the date and place you want to start, the day and place you want to leave from, and what you want to see and stay in between. Then we can get the whole picture and make suggestions. You also seemed to indicate some trepidation about driving on twisty mountain roads. You can't find a much more twisty mountain road than the Stelvio Pass. People come from all over the world to relish the white-knuckle experience of driving it in the summer.

Back to your question. If you were starting in Zurich, you might travel by train from Zurich to Chur, then take the Bernina Express train to Tirano, Italy, with plenty of Alpine scenery as it goes over the Alps. There it is a 1 1/2 hour train ride to Varenna on lake Como. That is a very good place to experience Lake Como, either there or a short ferry ride across to Bellagio.

You can then get a train from Varenna by way of Milan to Bolzano. Bolzano has its own issues in the summer as it has a reputation for being very hot, and it is not the best place to experience the Dolomites. That would be, IMO, Val Gardena town of Ortisei. You can get there by bus from Bolzano easily. Or you could rent a car in Bolzano, but even then you will have some of those twisty mountain roads to deal with, just not as twisty as going over Stelvio Pass.
