We will be staying in Brunate for 3 nights and 4 days and woud like to take te train to Milan...Duomo and other typical sights. The Italian train schedules mystify me...what stations in Como and Milan to use? Have searched the archives but cannot find anything that helps. Thanks for any tips.
Mary, train directly from Como Station to Milano Centrale, 17 euro and about 40 minutes. The Como station is Como San Giovanni.
What she said. From the huge Mussolini-era Milano Centrale train station, you can take the metro (subway) or a streetcar I believe to the heart of the city the Piazza del Duomo. From there a lot of sights are within walking distance the Duomo, La Scala Opera House, the fashion district. Also easily accessible by streetcar (tram) is DaVinci's Last Supper (Cenacola). That I thought was really worthwhile but you'll want to make reservations on their website as far in advance as possible. The access is carefully and strictly controlled. I spent six months living in Milano, and it's a city often neglected by tourists, but it has it's charms and sights and it is the economic powerhouse of Italy.
There is a competeing train on Trenord from Como Nord Lago station. Schedules at www.trenord.it It goes to Cadorna Station which is right by the Sforza Castle and close to the Church with the "Last Supper". 4.45 Euro 2nd class. 1 hour journey.
Como Nord Borghi will also do. Nord Lago is the terminus.
If you go to the Duomo, it's worth taking the elevator to the roof for closer views of the intricate stonework and views of the city.
Zoe...the Duomo rooftop is part of our plans! I was there in 1996 on my first visit to Milan and want to take my husband there to share the experience. Thanks for the reminder.
Shucks! We'll be there in 3 weeks. We had to sign up for a tour to get in to see "The Last Supper" and the Duomo is part of the tour. Glad the train went OK.
We ended up taking the train from Como Nord into Cadona station. Easy
peasy. Unfortunately we could not get into the Duomo...the line to get in was at least 4 hours long. This was due to the fact that the recently deceased Cardinal's body was lying in state for 3 days..funeral was today.
