Como San Giovanni Train Station to Varenna

Booked aa Best of Italy trip that meets in Varenna. We are coming in a day early and staying near the Como San Giovanni train station.
What is the best way to get from our location to Varenna?

You have three options:

  1. Take the ferry from Como to Varenna; journey time about 2 hours. There's a fast ferry that takes about an hour but you'll need to pay the supplement) Check timetables here: Navigazionelaghi.it Click on 'Timetables and lines' ( top middle of webpage) then on 'Como - Colico', to see the ferry schedules.

  2. Take the C30 ASF bus from San Giovanni station to Bellagio, then the ferry to Varenna (we did this when we took a day trip to Como from Varenna) You can check bus schedules here: ASF Autolinee.it

  3. Take the Eurocity train to Milano Centrale then transfer to a Regionale train to Varenna- Esino.
    Check train schedules on Trenitalia.com

Personally I'd probably go on the ferry, or the bus, but they are all good options.

You may consider getting to Varenna on day of arrival in order to experience a bit more time in the beautiful mid-lake area.

Have a wonderful trip!

Fast ferry is probably the easiest and best option. If sailing times don't work, there might be bus service to Bellagio from where you could take a short ferry ride to Varenna. That might be faster than the slow ferries from Como.

I'd probably taxi in that situation.

I hope you mean taxi from San Giovanni to the Como ferry dock. A taxi from Como San Giovanni to Varenna would cost a small fortune.

We did this in reverse, going from Varenna to Como San Giovanni to catch a train. I explored all the options. I thought the ferry ride might be long, and we would have needed a taxi to get from the dock to the train station. Going back south to Milano Centrale and getting on a train going north seemed to out of the way. So, like Priscilla, we took the ferry from Varenna to Bellagio, a 15 minute ride. Then we got on the C30 bus at the bus stop right across from the ferry dock and rode the bus for about an hour to the entrance to the train station. The bus ride around the Como leg of the lake was lovely!
