Como or Varenna

In May we (2 adults) are planning on spending 2 nights at Lake Como. I am trying to decide between staying in Como or in Varenna.

Which would you recommend and suggestions for hotels would be helpful. I have read the section about Lake Como in Rick Steves 2014 Italy guidebook.

Varenna, Menaggio, Bellagio or any town in the mid lake.. Mid lake is the best and you can jump from place to place by boat.

Como town at the south end of the lake is further from the mountains and mist and beauty that the lake is famous for. It's a nice lunch stop, and you can learn the history of batteries at the Volta Temple. But the mid-lake towns are where we like to spend two nights.

I'd also recommend Varenna and the mid-lake area. It's a wonderful small town and as mentioned, a great place to explore other towns in the area such as Bellagio, Menaggio or whatever (although with only two days, you won't have time for much exploring).

Regarding hotels, any of the ones listed in the Guidebook would be good. Albergo Milano is a big favourite with many, but as a result it's often fully booked. It would help to have some idea on your criteria for hotels (price, comfort level, etc.).

Varenna. Easy call. Easy train there from Milano Centrale, and it's a charming location.

Definitely Varenna (or any of the mid-lake towns). We fell in love with Varenna and it makes a nice base for exploring the other mid-lake towns. Have a great trip!

I thought Como was alot like a small city than a quaint town. I agree I would go up north more. Many like Varenna but I like Bellagio. Lots more restaurants and good ferry service. But up north more for sure.
